What to Expect in Your First Chiropractic Visit

It can be scary trying something new. Planning your first office visit with a chiropractor can bring on that nervousness for you.

A good chiropractor does everything they can to relieve your symptoms in as few visits as possible.

We have put together a guide to help relieve any of your pre-visit anxiety. Read the following to get rid of any fear you may feel before your first visit with the caring healers at Delta Chiropractic Center of Lansing.

Your First Chiropractic Visit

Even before meeting in person, the patient will chat on the phone with the chiropractor about their chiropractic philosophy, approach, and what works for the patient. The following sections detail what to expect during your first in-office visit.

Patient History
Expect to fill out many pages of paperwork. These forms will help the chiropractor establish your background, symptoms, and present condition. Prepare to provide details about family medical history, any prior injuries, and current treatments.

Some common questions include:

  • How did the pain start?
  • Where is it located?
  • How long have you experienced pain there?
  • Explain the pain - is it sharp, dull, or throbbing? Is it constant, or noticeable now and then?
  • Did the pain start after an injury?
  • What actions make it better or worse?

The Physical Exam
A complete chiropractic exam comes after the information gathering. This exam will check all your vitals respiration, pulse, reflexes, and blood pressure. There will be extra tests to check out your:

  • Posture
  • Range of motion
  • Neurological functions
  • Muscle strength and tone

Diagnostic Studies
Some of these extra imaging and laboratory work will need to take place at outside clinics.

  • X-ray imaging
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan
  • Other laboratory work

Some of these additional imaging and laboratory work will need to take place at outside clinics.

Beginning Treatment
Based on the patient’s history, the physical exam, and any additional diagnostic studies the chiropractor will make a diagnosis. The diagnosis the chiropractor reaches will include whether chiropractic care will most likely benefit the patient.

The chiropractor will review the diagnosis, the tailored treatment plan, and the anticipated length of treatment. Often, this information will also come in written form so the patient can do consider their options.

Typically, the treatment begins on the patient’s next visit, but occasionally the chiropractor will provide some initial therapy including:

  • Adjustments to key joint dysfunctions
  • Strength or stretching exercises
  • Massage and hot/cold compress
  • Posture suggestions

We hope this post has been able to help you relax before your first chiropractic visit. If you have more questions or are ready to schedule your first visit, call the professionals at Delta Chiropractic Center of Lansing today at (517) 321-3030.
